STI’s are infections that can be spread during sexual contact with an infected partner. Some STI’s may cause no obvious symptoms by have serious repercussions such as pelvic inflammatory disorder, blindness, pregnancy complications, infertility, cancer, and death. More than 30 different bacteria, viruses, and parasites are known to be transmitted through sexual contact. The World Health Organization estimates more than 1 million STI’s are acquired every day. Some infections, such as gonorrhea, have developed antibiotic resistance, which means that some common antibiotics no longer work to treat the infection. It is very important to move forward with strategies to prevent infection and complications. If a person becomes infected, it is important they speak with a provider promptly about treatment options. STIs are very common. In addition to HIV, there are dozens of other types of sexually transmitted diseases. Often there are no symptoms, at least not at first. Left untreated, STIs can cause serious health issues. The good news is all STIs, including HIV, are treatable, and many are curable. While routine testing for many STIs is recommended, that does not mean it always happens as part of a regular checkup or gynecologist exam. To know for sure, ask to be tested.
